December 12, 1967 – In 1967 interracial marriage was still illegal in 17 of the 50 states and biracial children were only whispered about behind closed doors. Suddenly, with the release of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, America was forced to confront accepting a loving relationship between a black man and a white woman. This image of a black man lovingly holding a white woman was unprecedented and caused an uproar. Liberals everywhere wondered if they really could accept their child marrying outside their race while conservatives adamantly proclaimed the undoing of society when the races mingled. The film itself is outstanding with intense performances from all as friends and family on both sides are forced to confront their acceptance of this very new kind of love. If you have never seen this movie, make it a point to do so, but remember that what is today easily accepted as every day normal once caused painful separations and split families apart.
