The Kennedy Half-Dollar

December 30, 1963 – Congress passes a bill to authorize the Kennedy Half Dollar in honor of the recently assassinated President.  Initially minted in 1964, the Kennedy half-dollar replaces the Benjamin Franklin half-dollar that has been in circulation since  1948.  The coins of 1964 would be the last coins composed of 90% silver and were widely collected for sentimental reasons.  It continues in limited circulation today.
